The Welch Company Building has long been an anchor in Scituate Harbor. It's housed a post office, a country store, a mill and a breakfast place which turned into a Chinese food restaurant at night, among other businesses.
It's also been a point of controversy in recent times, as a developer proposed turning the historic building into luxury condominiums. When the housing market went bust the developer sold off the Welch Company building, and now it's being renovated and (hopefully) restored to its former glory.

Only 2/3rds of its former glory. Until a big fire in 1957 it was s three story building. After the fire they rebuilt only the first two floors. The 3rd floor was the Welch Co furniture department. Used to be a wonderful store: Hardware, fishing rods, guns and ammo, gifts, housewares, lumber, toys, books....
ReplyDeleteMy mom took me down to see the fire, looked like the whole town was burning
Thank you very much for sharing those memories!
