Memorial Day

Who kept the faith and fought the fight;
The glory theirs, the duty ours.

No tadpoles were harmed in the making of this post.

DSCN5859

Spring brings babies of all shapes and sizes - including these tadpoles. Someday they will sprout legs and shed their tails and join the croaking legions of bullfrogs, but for now they swim silently under the water and grow, grow, grow.

This Old House

DSCN5814

Today's Old House is a familiar North Scituate landmark which has recently been undergoing restoration. This WPA building dates back to 1937 and is the future home of the Scituate Information Center

The red and white sign reads, "Attention Dog Owners - Please pick up after your pet - Thank you - - Attention Dogs - Woof Woof Ruff Ruff Good Dog!"

The Gull

A seagull contemplates his surroundings - or maybe he's just looking for breakfast.

"They drift on the still water...

DSCN5658

"...mysterious, beautiful..." - William Butler Yeats

Yesterday morning, a pair of swans were feasting on the watery greens where Satuit Brook runs into Scituate Harbor. I sat and watched them for almost an hour; around us, cars and trucks and people moved, all going about their business, but the swans created a quiet pocket of peace and I let myself be drawn into their private moments.

May Peace Prevail On Earth

DSCN5775

This unassuming white post on the corner of Cole Parkway and Front Street bears the words "Let peace prevail on earth" on each of its four sides, in four different languages. On a beautiful day like today, peace did not seem such a fanciful dream.

Fog

DSCN5616c

Today the harbor was a foggy place... you couldn't see the lighthouse out on Cedar Point from Cole Parkway, not even a hint that it was there, and boats just offshore were ghosts in the mist.

What time is it?

DSCN5468

Summertime - or just a bit before that hour!

This clock is in a little park near the North Scituate commuter rail station. It has a sister not far from the Greenbush stop; they were both placed in small green plazas created by the MBTA during construction of the Old Colony line.

Country Way Radio

DSCN5477

Country Way Radio in North Scituate repairs lamps and vacuums in addition to selling and servicing TVs and computers. In this age of big box national chain stores, it's nice to see places like Country Way Radio!

I'm sure there's a good explanation...

DSCN5445

It rained last night, but it wasn't hugely stormy, nor was the tide extraordinarily high - so I'm not sure exactly how this boat ended up where it did in the harbor, but I'm sure there's a good explanation.

Periwinkle

I held this periwinkle aloft but very still until he peeped slowly out of his shell...

The spring's first dandelion

DSCN5176c

Simple and fresh and fair from winter's close emerging,
As if no artifice of fashion, business, politics, had ever been,
Forth from its sunny nook of shelter'd grass--innocent, golden, calm as the dawn,
The spring's first dandelion shows its trustful face.

Moving House

DSCN5356, originally uploaded by Ali Crehan.
So, I'm driving around Scituate with an out-of-town friend who was visiting and we pull into the parking lot at Egypt Beach - and discover a house. In lots of small pieces and on four separate trailers. No one was around to ask where its eventual destination was.

That's one way to move house, I guess!

This Old House

DSCN5428

This old house on First Parish Road dates back to 1694 and was the home of William James. And it's for sale, too!

Spring means babies!

ELEPHANTS!!!

DSCN5351c, originally uploaded by Ali Crehan.
I will admit that I have been stalking Lawson Common. You see, there were elephants boxed up there, and I was very eager to see them freed.

Well, the fountain isn't running just yet, but the elephants are free!!

I told you so!

DSCN5235

Summer will be here before you know it, I said - and it looks like these kids are more than ready! Thursday was a gorgeous day, and yes, there were swimmers at Peggotty Beach.

This Old House

DSCN5221

Today's entry in the This Old House series dates back to 1811 and is on Country Way. It was the home of Abiel Cudworth, a descendant of one the town's first settlers. Abiel himself was a founder of the Baptist Society in Scituate; the First Baptist church was built just up the street in 1870.

Storm clouds

DSCN5135

Today was muggy and oppressive - and then the storm clouds rolled in.

I was lucky enough to catch these shots of Cedar Point and Scituate Harbor as the sky went dark and the sea went green. Enjoy.
