Turkeys in a tree

DSCN7252, originally uploaded by Ali Crehan.
Tonight, in somewhat of a funk, I went to the Men of Kent cemetery to try to get some photographs of the gravestones.

Instead, I found myself surrounded by turkeys.

Sometimes the universe isn't so subtle with its messages. It's hard to take oneself and one's troubles too seriously when surrounded by panicked turkeys on the run from moving cars and barking dogs.

Also, let me assure you that watching and listening to turkeys flying into the trees in a tizzy is very, very, very funny.

Taking it all in

DSCN7062, originally uploaded by Ali Crehan.
These three cats are long time residents at the Scituate Animal Shelter. They are feral cats, wary of people; they will never curl up in your lap and settle into your home. For many years they have lived communally in a room at the shelter, well-cared-for but inside always.

Thanks to some amazing volunteers and a generous donation, the shelter was able to build an outdoor enclosure for these cats. Now they can enjoy the sun and the grass, do a bit of birdwatching and feel the summer breezes. Their world just got a whole lot bigger and brighter, and it is amazing to see.

More anger management issues

DSCN6382, originally uploaded by Ali Crehan.

This hermit crab also (probably) has anger management issues, and may have eaten my This Old House Thursday post.

The Weinery

DSCN7161, originally uploaded by Ali Crehan.
The Weinery is one of those stores that makes you happy to shop local. It always looks inviting and cheerful, and the owners are passionate about what they do - although, to be fair, if you sold wine and cheese and chocolate for a living and failed to be deeply in love with your work, well, you might want to do some self-evaluation!

Whichever way the winds blows...

DSCN7171, originally uploaded by Ali Crehan.
This weathervane sits atop a building in the Bound Brook office complex in North Scituate. Its size first caught my eye, but as I zoomed in for a closer look I was astonished by the level of detail - it is truly a work of art.

A mascot in search of a name

DSCN7047, originally uploaded by Ali Crehan.
This wild guy and his turtle friend sit in front of Native, a store in Scituate Harbor (and, I will confess, one of my favorite local shops!). Created by Fred Conlon and beloved by many, he is a critter in search of a name - and Native's proprietor, Marie, is holding a contest for just that reason. Does he look like a Ralph? Heathcliff? Chewbacca? Hmmm.....

Gone fishin'

DSCN7052, originally uploaded by Ali Crehan.
It seems to me that a Sunday afternoon in the summer is the perfect time to go fishing.

Lonely truck

DSCN6746, originally uploaded by Ali Crehan.
It takes a lot of work, getting small children to the beach. Packing, planning, playing... inevitably, something gets left behind.

I hope the child who left it isn't nearly as sad as this poor forlorn truck.

Community garden

DSCN6357, originally uploaded by Ali Crehan.

There are several community gardens in Scituate; this one is located at the Jenkins Elementary School in Scitaute Harbor. The garden is cared for by parent volunteers, is organic and even gets compost from the school's own cafeteria. Three of Scituate's four elementary schools have community gardens - what a great way to teach children about so many different things!

so much depends on a red rowboat *

DSCN6927, originally uploaded by Ali Crehan.
These boats off Peggotty Beach rested quietly at their moorings as the sun began its languid stroll towards the evening.

Day is done...

DSCN6750, originally uploaded by Ali Crehan.

The sandcastle builders, swimmers, sunbathers and lifeguards have long since gone home, and the sun sets on Peggotty Beach.

Come to the carnival

DSCN6879, originally uploaded by Ali Crehan.
Every summer, the Knights of Columbus put on a carnival on Cole Parkway in Scituate Harbor. It's a perfect end to a steamy summer night, watching the lights spinning madly while the boats sit quietly in the harbor - all that stillness and dark quiet just beyond the laughter and screaming and wild colors.

This Old House

DSCN6730, originally uploaded by Ali Crehan.
Today's This Old House is the Ellis House in North Scituate - and I am telling you, this is one cool old house.

The 1874 building houses the Scituate Arts Association and is currently undergoing some serious renovation. The paint job on the front gives you an idea of what they're aiming for - as amazing as this house is, it can only get better with some tender loving care!

Sneak peek

Just a little sneak peek at the doorstep for tomorrow's This Old House.

Glacier rock

DSCN6716, originally uploaded by Ali Crehan.
Once, long ago, glaciers moved across this land - and they left pebbles behind as they traveled.

This glacier rock is one of a pair that sit along the trail in Ellis Estate.

Sunset in a spider's web

DSCN6664, originally uploaded by Ali Crehan.
The old pilings alongside the pier at the sandpits are festooned with spiderwebs - those are some industrious arachnids. I loved the way the sunset gently touched this web.

Ellis Estate Exercise Station

DSCN6727, originally uploaded by Ali Crehan.
The Ellis Estate is part of town conservation land and consists of lovely walking trails through the woods. At some point a young man named Jesse Allen marked out the trails for his Eagle Scout Project. The signs still remain, though not all of them are where they originally started - like this stretching station.

The idea was that there were stations along the trails with specifics exercises, stretching and aerobic activities and so on. I remember going there with a friend in the mid to late eighties; the signs were new and on posts, and there were beams and so on for each station. It was pretty neat.

I wonder if there's a Scituate Eagle Scout candidate out there who might consider rehabbing the trail for his project. That would be very cool.

Another popular spot to sit harborside is the Mill Wharf. What a lovely way to spend a summer evening!

Drains to waterway

DSCN6393, originally uploaded by Ali Crehan.
This metal emblem can be spotted at street drains all over the harbor - a subtle reminder that whatever goes into that grate ends up in the ocean.

Maybe it should be less subtle.

Harborside

DSCN6688, originally uploaded by Ali Crehan.
Today was brutally hot and humid here in the Northeast region of the United States. Being on the coast provides a little bit of a break; by evening the breeze off the ocean was more than a little welcome. Dining harborside is a perfect way to end a hot summer day. These folks on the outside patio at TK O'Malley's have front row seats for the sunset.

Fishing on the Herring River

DSCN6677, originally uploaded by Ali Crehan.
It was a beautiful weekend here in Scituate, great for beach trips and boat trips and fishing trips. As the sun dropped low, this man tried his luck at the sandpits off the Driftway.

Bonfire on the beach

DSCN6410, originally uploaded by Ali Crehan.
The Fourth of July celebrations of fireworks and bonfires on Scituate beaches aren't what you would call official events - it all just sort of, well, happens. And hopefully everyone is safe and smart, because the police and fire departments are concerned that the parties are getting out of hand.

So maybe I didn't actually see this bonfire on a beach last night... or maybe I did.

Either way, have a safe and happy Independence Day, everyone!

And the rocket's red glare

DSCN6482, originally uploaded by Ali Crehan.
The night before Independence Day, the coastline of Scituate glows. There are bonfires along the water and fireworks bursting in the air. Sometimes it's hard to know which way to look - where color blossom against the night sky next?

Day 183!

DSCN6392, originally uploaded by Ali Crehan.
Today is the 183rd day of the year. There are 182 days remaining in 2010.

In other words, Scituate Daily Photo has made it to the halfway point. For 183 days, a photo has gone up, a moment has been recorded, a piece of Scituate shared with the world.

Here's to 182 more!

The first post of 2010 was a sky scene, so I thought I'd mark this occasion with another view of the heavens. This photo was taken in Scituate Harbor; the clouds looked so low and so clearly defined that I couldn't resist them.

Theme Day: Reflection

DSCN2866, originally uploaded by Ali Crehan.
The first day of the month is Theme Day in the global community of City Daily Photo bloggers, and the theme for July 2010 is Reflection.

Click here to view thumbnails for all participants

This photography studio on Cole Parkway in Scituate Harbor has a lovely display of their work. I caught the reflection of a tree on the parkway and thought the scenes somehow worked together, the reflection against the display.
