Our final entry in the Sacred Sunday Series is the Union Mission Chapel. This tiny little building on Old Oaken Bucket Road is easy to miss if you zip by as quickly as most commuters do in this area. Its signboard proclaims that it is an interdenominational church and that all are welcome to its Sunday evening. services.
Beyond that, I haven't been able to discover much about this church. If you know more, I'd love for you to share your information!

Lost your mittens, you naughty kittens!
Walking through the harbor this afternoon, Miss M spotted this tiny doll's blouse on the window sill of a store front. It's likely a child dropped it on the sidewalk, where a kindly soul spied it and moved it up to eye level...

Beach entrance closed
"The entrance to Minot Beach at the end of Gannett Road will be closed until further notice. Shifting rocks have created changing and unsafe conditions at the end of the ramp. To minimize potential risk and injury, access to this area is now prohibited. The north entrance of this beach remains open and lifeguards will remain on duty. The Town is currently exploring various options in this area, but none will be in place in the short-term. The Town recognizes that this will be inconvenient for residents but must err on the side of public safety for all beach goers." - email notice from the town of Scituate

Something not very nice happened here.
I am making a conscious choice not to speculate at great length about the events that left this many feathers strewn in its wake.

Moira Monday: Percy Mann's Car
Moira says, "We were going through the wildflower garden at the Mann House and I saw this. It's Percy Mann's car. He lived at that house and he got mad at the town about money fees so he drove his car into the back yard and never drove it again. It sat there so long it rusted and a tree grew up out of it. It's a very, very, very old car."
Here's a link to the Historical Society's explanation of Percy Mann's car. Moira didn't like seeing it near the beautiful flowers, but it's a pretty funny story.

Sacred Sunday: St. Mary of the Nativity
Next up in our Sacred Sunday series is St. Mary's in Scituate Harbor. This Roman Catholic Church is the largest church in town and serves many in the community. Located at the intersection of several major roads leading into the harbor, this ornate building is a well-known landmark in Scituate.

Baby it's cold outside
Actually, it's far from cold outside - as I look out my window, the thermometer reads 103 in the shade.
So - instead of a photo of some poor bedraggled soul walking down Front Street, or of flowers wilting in the scorching sun, I decided to dip into my archives and pull out a little something colder - namely this Bound Brook Office Court building in North Scituate, taken on January 27th.
You can look at this as inspiration to "think cold" or you be reminded that as hot as it is, at least there's no shoveling involved. Either way - baby, it was cold outside.

The Knights of Columbus Carnival is on Cole Parkway in the harbor until Saturday night... and there will be fireworks tomorrow and Saturday! (Here's hoping no fields are harmed in the pyrotechnics this year!)

Day is done
There is nothing more soul-soothing than a beach at the end of the day. (Or, more honestly speaking, if there is any such creature then it doesn't speak to me tonight.) It's quieter. It breathes more easily. People sitting in beach chairs scattered across the rocks lean back into the approaching sunset and exhale gently. The waves murmur rather than roar at end of day...
And the sand glows.

Moira Monday: Patrolman Carson
Moira says, "My family was driving along the road and I saw this marker. It is a memorial marker for a policeman who died in the line of duty in 1938. I think it's important to know about and remember this man who worked to protect our town."
Patrolman Edward W. Carson died in the line of duty on September 4, 1938 and is remembered with this headstone in front of the Scituate Police Department.

Sacred Sunday: St. Luke's Episcopal Church
Next up in our Sacred Sunday series is St. Luke's Episcopal Church. St. Luke's is a more modern looking building, having been built in 1965, and occupies a corner lot at one of the main intersections in town. Their website is quite welcoming and full of information - it's refreshing to see churches in the area which have embraced the internet as a means of both reaching out to newcomers and embracing and supporting current members.

Swan in Scituate Harbor
This swan is one of a pair that have made the harbor their home. They move serenely among the fishing boats and summer people, scarcely acknowledging the day cruiser as it motors out for the day or the kayakers who thread the sailboats at their moorings.

Please give blood
The Red Cross issued an appeal for blood donations this week as the nation's blood supply reached critically low levels.
This blood drive at St. Mary's is a regular one and was experiencing a good turnout. (Though I do wonder why they have their signs out back, instead out by the main roads where everyone could see them!) Donors got a coupon for a free carton of Friendly's ice cream and were given instructions to avoid heavy lifting for the rest of the day.
Rest assured that certain donors are really working that last bit - oh Mr. Scituate Daily Photo, could you please move the tv remote a little closer? The nice Red Cross people said I should take it very easy.... ;-)

The rain came down.
I was reading a book today in which a character described clouds as being lakes floating around the sky. It sounds lovely and dreamy, these wispy bodies of water languidly drifting through the heavens, doesn't it?
Well, someone grabbed ahold of that lake bottom in the sky and ripped it wide open this afternoon, and it poured.
To whomever rode this bike to the train station this morning - you will have one of those puddle-created nasty wet stripes up your back by the time you pull into your driveway. I'm so sorry. But your bike did look kinda pretty waiting for you in the rain.

"It" being a supply of water for their fountain home - a fact which makes Miss M smile every time we drive by Lawson Common!

Sacred Sunday: St. Frances X. Cabrini
Today's entry in the Sacred Sunday series is St. Frances X. Cabrini, a Catholic church which has been held in vigil for 2,448 days thus far.
For my readers from outside the area, a very brief explanation - in 2004, the Archdiocese began the process of shuttering many of its parishes and consolidating the congregations. Some churches which were scheduled to be closed were held open by parishioners, who have maintained 24 hour vigils in the buildings to literally prevent the doors from being shut. St. Frances is one of those holdouts.
Despite their current uncertain future, parishioners have maintained a vibrant community in this church. By the end of the summer, they should have an answer to their appeal to the Vatican... and while they wait, they remain in vigil.

The Gathering
As part of Scituate's Summer Music Series, local band The Gathering put on a concert at the bandstand on Cole Parkway. Folks of all ages came down with their beach chairs and picnic blankets and enjoyed the music. It was a perfect summer day for the perfect summer music, and toddlers and retirees alike were tapping their feet and shaking their hips. ;-)

Out with the old, in with the new
Remember the storm on December 26th? The one that pummeled Scituate, ripped holes in the seawall, caused fires and flooding? Well, the damage is still being repaired over six months later.
The storage shed at Scituate Light took a serious beating in that storm and is now being replaced. Lighthouse Keeper Bob Gallagher posted about this construction on the Scituate Light's blog, and I wandered down to take a look for myself.
It's a little odd to see a whole section of the building gone.

Jump
What is it about bridges and summer waters that are so irresistible to boys of a certain age? They teeter on the edge - flex their toes - and then leap - swim back to the water's edge with long gangly limbs - and clamber back up onto the railings - and leap again. Over and over.

In flight
Red winged blackbirds are nesting in this marsh grass and are not interested in having their offspring appear on Scituate Daily Photo. This particular bird was quite emphatic on that point!

Hang your suit up to dry
This wetsuit hanging up to dry on an otherwise postcard perfect balcony made me giggle.
I love summer in Scituate.

Moira Monday: Fourth of July
Moira says, "This year Scituate had a big ceremony for the Fourth of July. They don't usually but it's our 375th anniversary and they wanted to do something because of that. They were selling t-shirts and stickers and flags at this tent. The 'Don't Give Up The Ship' motto comes from a sea battle in 1812 that you could see from Second Cliff here in Scituate."

Theme Day: The Color Green
I had a few ideas for today's shot, but then my friend Nancie sent me a cameraphone shot of this hedge out by Peggotty Beach - and, well, that was that! Thanks, Nancie!!
