Monochrome Monday: Happy Halloween

DSC_1289a-wm by Ali Crehan

It's an annual tradition, trick or treating in the harbor. They close Front Street to traffic for a couple of hours and the merchants throw open their doors and welcome the party that is Halloween with arms held wide. Everywhere you turn there's some amazing get-up, some adorable child, some costumed dog or decorated stroller, and I swear I will upload pictures of these and more tomorrow and you'll be able to click this link here  [updated to add - see, I told you I'd do it!!] to see them... but right now, people, I am pooped, because the older your child gets the more exhausting Halloween gets - or maybe it's the older the parent gets...?

In any case, what caught my eye tonight was not the crowds and the crazy fun, but this sweet and quiet moment - a little princess and a small ghost, disheveled and tired and taking a step back from the crowd to recollect themselves.

Happy Halloween - hope it was all treats and no tricks for you all.

What goes up...

...must come down.

In the wake of yesterday's storm, the waves were wild, twisting behemoths. As far out as you could see, the silvery crests raced each other. They made rainbows as they burst into foam against the seawalls and they slammed back into one another, so it was swells coming and going like some crazy, joyful mosh pit.

Minot Light fell once to the waves but never since, and it braced a granite shoulder against enormous whitecaps and came through clean and glistening on the other side, again and again and again. It was all fierce and wild and people clutched the rails along the walls along the water and laughed.

And it was good.

I am going to have a devil of a time picking photos for today's post.

The surf is crazy wild today in the wake of yesterday's massive storm. Here's a photo of the surf breaking over the seawall at Minot to tide you over while I cull through all the others I took today!

It's October, and there's a storm in Scituate...

You know what that means:

TV News crews, with their colorful logo-covered rain gear and their enormous satellite-on-a-pole trucks.

DSC_0904

I hope they get hazard pay. You see that poor guy off to the right side of the frame, lugging the heavy equipment to and from the truck? He's setting up a whole shot on the other side of the lighthouse, where it's windy and nasty, because nothing makes people happier than seeing a reporter getting pelted by the storm, I guess.

Of course, it's not all that exciting down here - lots of rain, lots of wind but so far (knock on wood!) no snow. But the news crews love to come hang out in Scituate whenever a bit of weather kicks up.

The tide comes in...

DSC_0874a-wm

You know you live in a coastal community when you get emails from the school system with the subject line, "Bus Stop High Tide Alert" and the friendly reminder, "Please be aware of the tides. If any of the AM or PM tides cause streets in your neighborhood to be impassable, students will be picked up and/or dropped off at the nearest clear bus stop." They even have a list of the bus stops that are likely to be impacted, and the alternate clear stop for each location. Handy.

Oh, and when the sign in the parking lot says:

DSC_0876a-wm

it's not referring to a once-in-a-blue-moon kind of high tide, either.

For those who are dismayed by today's gloomy rains - it could be worse. Some areas of Massachusetts will see snow tonight, or that dreaded, nasty "wintry mix."

Of those so close beside me, which are you?
God bless the Ground! I shall walk softly there,
And learn by going where I have to go.

The Men of Kent Cemetery is a small one and an old one, with many headstones splitting, falling, fallen, covered with lichen and worn soft with the passing of time. They were once flinty sharp-edged witnesses, but there have been so many seasons to yield to, so much New England weather to blunt the details, and it was all so very long ago.

The names in this cemetery are scattered all over the town - Turner, Jenkins, Merritt, Cudworth, Tilden, Hatherly, Gannett. It's easy to take the names for granted - just another street, just another school, just another word that's commonplace to this place. But here lie the bodies of...

You've been flocked!

DSC_0814a-wm by Ali Crehan
DSC_0814a-wm, a photo by Ali Crehan on Flickr.

Looks like someone got flocked! This group of flamingos actually represent good deeds - charity made fun, as it were. The idea is that a flock of flamingos will mysteriously appear on the victim's front lawn, along with a note indicating where they came from. For a donation, the victim can choose where the flock next lands - a fun and creative way to raise money for a good cause.

Now, I don't know what charity this flock represents - something which I think is a missed opportunity! In fact, I don't know for certain that a charity is involved; I have heard of folks getting flocked for milestone birthdays, for example.

In any event, it's a funny sight on a side street in Scituate!

Monochrome Monday: Fall showers bring...

... um, mushrooms.

The recent wet weather has led to an awful lot of mushrooms popping their wee (and sometimes not so wee) heads out of the ground. I spotted this one languishing in the grasses of Men of Kent Cemetery.

Graffiti

Teenagers everywhere like to complain, "There's nothing to do around here!" - especially in a small town.

I'm not sure how spray-painting the names of heavy metal bands on the playground equipment at a local preschool provides entertainment, but there it is.

Sigh.

... provided the kind of warmth and sunlight that a cat loves to stretch out in.

This particular gorgeous beastie is especially happy to be able to stretch out in the mellow autumn sun, as one of the resident feral cats at the Scituate Animal Shelter. Last year, donors and volunteers pulled together and created a small enclosure off the back of the shelter so that Aspen and the others living with him can enjoy a bit of the outdoors. It has made an tremendous difference in their lives, and it is enormously gratifying to see them so happy.

This past Sunday was National Feral Cat Day; the Scituate Animal Shelter is one of many organizations and individuals working towards bettering the lives of these cats.

Weather only a duck could love.

Or a goose, I guess.

It's been pouring all day long, a cold and deeply unsatisfying rain that gets into your shoes and makes your socks soggy. I would like it to stop, please.

DSC_0370a-wm

Have I mentioned that I harbor intense feelings of enmity towards these geese that hang out in my neighborhood? They're noisy and they poop all over the road and generally make me nuts. Why doesn't the fisher cat in my neighborhood do something about this? My daughter has taken to shouting, "Look out, geese, there's a coyote behind you!" but they aren't fooled.

Sigh. Fly south already, you darn birds.

These glass window panes in the door of the Cudworth House have bullseyes (or pontil marks) at the center. This mark is made when the molten glass is poured or otherwise formed into a flat pane and is often seen in old homes throughout New England.

Today Scituate Historical Society properties all across town were open, including  the Stockbridge Grist Mill. This property isn't often open, so it was a special treat to get to see the inside of the  Mill. And not only was the Grist Mill open, but it was running and producing corn meal, to the delight of everyone who visited!

Many thanks to the Historical Society members who staff sites during open house hours and who work so hard to keep history alive in town!

... turn to brown.

The green of the trees is giving way to the reds and golds and orange blazes of fall, and soon enough they'll be memories hushing the ground while they themselves lie beneath a blanket of snow.

And so it goes - another summer gone.

A splash of salt water and a generous brush-stroke of sunset can make even a ruin of a fisherman's trap look lovely.

Traditionally, Mondays are monochromatic on Scituate Daily Photo - but I liked this image just the way it was, and felt it was close enough to sneak past.

The nippy weather of late has gotten more than a few people in the mood to decorate for Halloween - I've been spying ghosts and pumpkins in trees and on lawns all over town.

This weekend's forecast, however, calls for temperatures in the eighties - which will be quite a change from the near-frost temps we'll be seeing tonight!

Happy birthday Scituate!!

DSC_9832a-wm

Today Scituate turned 375. That's right, today is the town's birthday!

DSC_9834a-wm

To celebrate, Scituate 375th Anniversary Committee threw the town a birthday party at Scituate's new Community Building (that's the old Pier 44 restaurant, for you no-longer-local Scituatonians!).

DSC_9839a-wm

The cake was made by Front Street Gourmet and was astonishingly beautiful, covered with fondant scenes from all around town. A certain young person I know waited patiently by the cake table until she was able to snag just the piece she wanted:

And yes, it did taste as good as it looked:

Happy birthday Scituate!

The Mystery Object: "The Heritage of Freedom by the Sea"

DSC_9716a-wm by Ali Crehan
DSC_9716a-wm, a photo by Ali Crehan on Flickr.
Congratulations to the anonymous commenter who correctly identified the object and its location - a sculpture in front of Scituate Town Hall - and one of the several scenes depicted, Supreme Judicial Court Chief Justice William Cushing putting an end to legal slavery in Massachusetts in the year 1783.

This piece titled "The Heritage of Freedom by the Sea" was created in 1986 by Massachusetts sculptor Sonni Waldo and is in front of town hall. It has four faces which are covered with scenes from Scituate's history. On this particular section, you can see Chief Justice Cushing's landmark decision rendered. Also depicted are Rebecca and Abigail Bates, "The Army of Two" frightening away the British troops during the war of 1812.

There's also an image of someone drinking from the Old Oaken Bucket made famous by Samuel Woodworth's poem!

Each section of the sculpture is packed with images from the town's history and is well worth a look the next time you happen to be in the area!

Today is the first day of the month - or Theme Day for City Daily Photo blogs around the world! The theme for October 2011 is "Mystery Object."

So... who can tell me what and where this is - and what's going on in this artistic depiction?

If you'd like to see how other City Daily Photo bloggers are interpreting this month's theme, click here to view thumbnails for all participants - and enjoy. :)
