Hearts adorn the entryway to a local elementary school... the advantage to this mild winter, outdoor decorations in January!

Lost
We came across this abandoned boogie board at the bottom of a hill on the Widow's Walk golf course and wondered what stories it could tell. My guess is that it was pressed into service when it snowed last weekend, as a temporary sled... but whether it's a sled in want of a snowy hill or a boogie board in want of a curling wave, it's getting neither - poor forlorn thing.

A year ago today...
The rain may make for a dreary, gloomy day - but I'd rather have this cold drizzle than the snow we had one year ago today!

A friendly wave
Someone thoughtfully placed this errant glove on a fence post in the parking lot of Widows Walk golf course, where it waves confidently to all comers and goers. It seems fairly certain it will be reclaimed - if a glove can be seen to seem as such.

Green greens
With temperatures nearing sixty degrees today, the snow didn't stand a chance - and to think on Saturday we had more than six inches of the stuff!

Another picture perfect New England home...
... nestled close against the snow. I love the bright cheerfulness of this house, with its garlands and red curtains - and I especially love the snowflakes adorning the front window.

Signing the Wind Turbine
Scituate new wind turbine is arriving in pieces, and today town residents were given the opportunity to put their John Hancocks on one of the enormous blades.

Despite the stormy weather and somewhat slick roads, folks turned out in droves and grabbed a Sharpie to make their mark.
For more photos of the signatures on the blade, click here.

A picture print from Currier & Ives
It was a winter wonderland out there this morning - that soft, fluffy snow that sparkles in the morning light as the trees stretch their arms and shake it off into the wind. This house looked like such a traditional New England winter scene....
More is on the way, potentially as much as six inches south of the city tomorrow afternoon - here's hoping it doesn't mess with that turbine's arrival and signing!

Modern Sculpture
These cranes are readying themselves for the arrival of Scituate's new wind turbine - and doing a great impression of a massive modern sculpture while they wait.
In the background, you can see Fourth Cliff, that far flung outpost of Scituate.
Scituate residents who have a hankering to make their mark in town history are invited to come sign the wind turbine blade this Saturday!

Monochrome Monday: Crane in Waiting
This enormous crane looms over the Driftway, patiently waiting and watching for a wind turbine to make its way to Scituate.
Right now the turbine lies in pieces in Rhode Island awaiting transport across state lines... anticipation is building throughout town!

Four-and-twenty robins
American robins have been everywhere this January - bright flashes of red against a pseudo-winter sky, clinging to branches as bare and crooked as their tiny claws.
There were at least forty of them fighting for a spot on the berry bushes. Perhaps the overnight dip in temperatures - down to a mere ten degrees this morning! - made them question their place in this landscape? The early bird may get the worm, but these harbringers of spring are so premature as to be rude!

Boom!
Friday the 13th was a mild day here in Scituate; I didn't even bother with a jacket while taking this photograph at Minot Beach, as it was 49 degrees - balmy for January!
The waves were high and the wind was whipping, though. If you look closely at this crashing seafoam you'll see that it's full of rocks and debris. It sounded like someone was throwing gravel at a storm window!

And then, the rain.
While points north and west saw sleet and snow today, here in Scituate we got nothing but rain - dank, dreary, cold, relentless rain. Blech. It remains in the mid forties as I write this entry, with the forecast calling for temperatures nearing 50 degrees tomorrow.
Who wants to lay odds on an April Fool's Day blizzard this year, or a snowy Easter? It certainly seems like it's going to be one of those winters.

A world lightly cloaked in snow
Yesterday's full Wolf Moon was setting on a world lightly cloaked in snow. Most spots in Scituate saw just over half an inch, enough to lend a glisten and a sparkle, a gentle blanket of shimmering white - but as the sun rose it began to melt away and by midday it was just a whisp of fog and memory.

Bates Lane - a walk in the woods
Yesterday morning there was snow - and today it was 58 degrees. Perfect weather for a walk in the woods...

First snow of 2012
It snowed last night - the first snow of 2012! Just a light dusting on windshields and the roads, so don't go pulling out your toboggans and snow pants... tomorrow's it's going to reach 50 degrees again.
This is a strange winter.

Recycling for Good
I spotted this bright red bin at the town library today - recycling for a good cause, the Scituate High School Service Trip to Guatemala!
No, I did not recycle my camera - but I did forget to put my battery back into my camera after it finished charging. Aren't cellphone cameras handy?
So if you have anything to contribute to this worthy cause, now you know where to bring it. ;-)

Chickadee-dee-dee-dee
Walking through conservation land in the West End of Scituate, it was easy to hear the chickadees as they flitted through the bare trees - but less easy to catch one of them sitting still. The black-capped chickadee is the state bird of Massachusetts and a very common sight all year round.

2011 Photo of the Year: Winter
And the last of my three finalists is a winter shot, taken on January 26, 2011. This photo is so quintessentially New England to me - the red of the berry against the white of the snow, the burst of color in the midst of bleak winter.
I hope you enjoy these three photos... it was astonishingly hard to narrow it down! Thank you for the gift of your presence, for your kind comments and your shared love of this wonderful, beautiful place.
Happy New Year!

2011 Photo of the Year: Black and White
The second finalist, a black and white shot of budding hydrangeas in July, was one that I kept coming back to again and again. It was a favorite of visitors as well, eliciting numerous comments. Deep in December it's nice to remember that there will once again be flowers, and that they will be heart-stoppingly beautiful...

2011 Photos of the Year
But in 2011 I'd posted more than 450 photos to Scituate Daily Photo - if there's one thing this year has made clear, it's that I'm not very good at sticking to the "one photo per day" rule. Trying to pick just one of those photos for today's post was simply impossible. In the end, I narrowed it down to nine finalists; each one was selected for very different reasons.
I've come down to three photos of the year - so without further ado....
2011 - The Year That Was....
It's going to be a very, very difficult choice... although I've narrowed it down to a few likely suspects...
Here's Scituate Daily Photo 2011, viewed as a slideshow through Flickr. Enjoy looking back!
