Leap Day Snow Storm

Leap Day Snow Storm by Ali Crehan
Leap Day Snow Storm , a photo by Ali Crehan on Flickr.

It's saying something when today's weather passes for a 'snow storm' - a bit of pretty fluff that will be gone in the blink of an eye. Tomorrow is one day closer to the relentless march towards spring, and this will be just a Winter That Wasn't in our rearview mirror.

I'm no entomologist

I think this exquisite creation may be a cocoon or egg case for a praying mantis. There are a number of them in this area; I never noticed them until this afternoon!

Anyone able to shed a little light on the subject matter?

Monochrome Monday: I couldn't make this story up if I tried.

I decided to take a spin out to Humarock this afternoon. Wandering the beach with virtually no one else in sight, the slightly overcast sky peering over my shoulder... when out of nowhere, a beach ball came bouncing from the houses and towards the water. It was a bright pop of frantic color as it made its escape, bounding over the sand and into the waves like an overexcited puppy. No one chased after it. No one seemed to notice at all - even the seagulls were preoccupied with other important matters.

If I hadn't had a camera, I'd think I imagined the whole thing.

Within minutes it was long gone, heading towards Spain or perhaps Bermuda. Somewhere out there tonight, an optimistic beach ball is skittering along waves and looking for adventure.

When the universe throws something like this at you, well, I take it on good faith that I need to acknowledge a tiny dot of color on an otherwise monochromatic day.

Sailors!

The flags in front of the Gates School were dancing in yesterday's winds. (Today was rainy and gross, so I thought we'd all enjoy a sunnier image from the day before.)

I think we're all more than ready to call the groundhog a liar and get on with the spring part of our seasonal dance. Who's with me?

Do not cross!

To keep the public at a safe distance from the wind turbine work site, fences and police tape have been strategically placed... but there are plenty of good spots to watch the action from, nevertheless.

R2D2!

R2D2 by Ali Crehan
R2D2, a photo by Ali Crehan on Flickr.

I'm sorry, but there was no way I could resist this one and those of you who know me know why.

You see, there's a certain amount of, um, fandom in my house for a certain scifi niche. Yes, we are fan of the Wars. In fact, we have an entire room full of Star Wars toys, memorabilia, action figures, posters, bobbleheads, pez dispensers and the like. It's that serious.

So there was no way I was going to dash into the Village Market in Scituate Harbor for some half-and-half, spy this little droid full of ice tea and not photograph him. Hey, the first time I saw Star Wars it was in Scituate Harbor!

In waiting

All the pieces have finally made it to town. This turbine and its blades are stationed in a parking lot while the tower is assembled up the street... if all goes according to plan, the new wind turbine will be completed this weekend.

Town border

Town border by Ali Crehan
Town border, a photo by Ali Crehan on Flickr.

The town line with Norwell, where Clapp Road becomes Mt. Hope Street.

A bit of explanation for newer readers -

Scituate is a beautiful town and I love trying to capture some fraction of that beauty in this daily photo project. However, I also make an effort to capture mundane details - because what strikes me in going through old newspapers, memoirs and postcards is how much those mundane details mean years down the line. I see a sepia-toned photograph of the intersection of Country Way and First Parish and compare the trees with the current day's traffic lights; I find a tattered postcard of Minot Beach and try to my daughter's favorite starfish hunting spots behind the smiling strangers in their old-fashioned swimming costumes.

Locals and" ex-pats" - what mundane details do you think matter? What simple sights should not be overlooked?

Huh?

Huh? by Ali Crehan
Huh?, a photo by Ali Crehan on Flickr.
These large question marks adorn the telephone pole at Itchy's Corner, where I'm sure they are confusing anyone who's traveling between the bordering towns of Norwell and Cohasset without going down Clapp Road in Scituate. There's an explanatory sign at the Mr. Hope Improvement Society Building -

Why did the barn cross the road?

This one's for you, Dad.

This sign hangs on a fence off Clapp Road near the Norwell border and on the perimeter of Wampatuck State Park.Once upon a time, these state park grounds were home to the Hingham Naval Ammunition Depot Annex... now it is recreational land and most of the traces of a military presence have been removed.

Don't even get me started on the graffiti, which has been a major issue in Scituate lately. This particular blue bit of nonsense has been there a while but who knows what it's supposed to signify... at least with the initials on the nearby tree, we have some idea of why they're there!

... that'll be here long after we've gone? I can't even write it in the steam on the mirror...

I wonder how long ago RC and AM were carved into the trunk of this tree, and if they love each other still.... spotted on Clapp Road, near the Norwell town line....

Snow Moon

Ali Crehan Photography: Scituate Daily Photo 2012 &emdash; Snow Moon

February's full moon - the Snow Moon - rises over Scituate Lighthouse...

Initially I was focusing on the detail of the moon, but fell in love with the quality of the moonlight on the waters of the night harbor....

Theme Day: Animals

DSC_6830a-wm by Ali Crehan
DSC_6830a-wm, a photo by Ali Crehan on Flickr.

It's the first day of the month, and in the worldwide City Daily Photo community that means it's Theme Day. The theme for February 2012 is "Animals."

But wait, you think, where are the animals? It's just an afternoon sky splashed with clouds and sunlight.

But my daughter and I spotted an alligator, a rabbit, a cat crouched down ready to pounce, a lumpy camel and a unicorn. We argued about the presence of a manatee, and I could not convince her that a carp was leaping over a stone.
