Union Cemetery... so much is conveyed in one simple line carved in stone.

Astronomy Day
The South Shore Astronomical Society (http://www.ssastros.org/) visited Scituate Town Library for the annual Astronomy Day yesterday, Visitors were able to use telescopes to view the sun, visit a portable planetarium, do experiments and crafts and hear lectures from club members. And after darkness fell, the SSAC set up telescopes on the library lawn for a night sky viewing. Amazing!

Dormez vouz?
I have spotted the hummingbirds in my yard, but I'll be completely gobsmacked if I manage to catch one of those with the camera!

April vacation
There's no denying that this has been an unusual year, weather-wise. A winter so mild that I'm not sure we ever even shoveled snow from our front walk - and I know for certain I never wore my heaviest winter coat - and now we have been launched into the 80s and my beach hats are fighting my winter gloves and scarves for shelf space in the front hall closet.
The beaches were packed yesterday - and I do mean packed. There was no parking to be had at Minot and the lot was near full at Egypt Beach. April vacation is feeling more like summer!

Monochrome Monday: Dribble
Making dribble castles at the beach - as contemplative and soothing as any meditative practice....

The last thing the squirrel sees.
Or, "Why My Cats Are Indoor Cats."
We have a number of red-tailed hawks in our neighborhood and often see them riding the wind currents, seemingly effortless and almost lazy as they turn and bank and glide.
Shortly after we moved into this house, our calico was sitting in the upstairs window watching the birds on our lawn. I leaned over her shoulder to look - and at that moment a hawk dove past our window and grabbed something on the ground below.
It was an hour before I saw the cat again. She felt much safer under the sofa after seeing the hunter outside.

Cushing Memorial State Park
I'm pleased to to report that this spring's visit was an entirely different experience!

The pathway leading up to the burial ground had been carefully swept clean and lined with stones and logs. At the top of the hill, a sign explaining the importance of the park has been erected:

and the path alongside the burial ground walls is neatly covered with cedar chips. A lovely wooden bench provides a spot to sit in the pine trees. The cemetery itself has been cleaned, and the stone walkway leading up to William Cushing's grave has re-emerged from the pine needles and overgrowth:

It looks wonderful! All this hard work was done by Zach Koziel and he deserves an enormous thank you for his efforts! Zach's project was made possible by the Boy Scouts and parents of Troop 7 in Scituate, the Scituate Historical Society, the Daughters of the American Revolution, Aubuchon Hardware, Glynn Tree Experts, J Michael Landscaping, Mr. Pete Spencer, Mr. Tom DeCoste, Hassan Sign, Doyle Computer Services and South Shore Auto Parts.
Thank you to everyone who helped restore this important piece of history to its current lovely state!

Benjamin Balch
We're used to seeing the flags that mark the graves of veterans in wars dating back to the American Revolution - but we're used to seeing the Stars and Stripes flying there. Benjamin Balch's monument reminds us that the war wasn't as simple as "us against them."

Hatch Burial Ground
Scituate is riddled with history and reminders of times long since past. And those who lived that history have their quiet resting spots all throughout the town... take Hatch Burial Ground, for example. Tucked away at the end of Judge Cushing Road in Greenbush in between two private homes, it holds the graves of members of the Jacob and Hatch families. When Benjamin Jacob was buried here in 1792, this was farmland and salt marshes as far as the eye could see.

Another sure sign of spring....
The piers are being installed for the season in Scituate Harbor. The pilings are driven in to hold the piers in place; soon the area will fill in with pleasure boats.

Marching into the sea
This rope fence marks the perimeter of Egypt Beach; the tides and storms of winter have shifted the rocks until the lower posts are almost buried beneath them.
Every winter, the beaches change. After a mild winter like the one from which we are emerging, the changes are often slight - but there have been years where the season rearranged the landscape entirely.

Dad's Place
This convenience store on Hatherly Road recently got a paint job - and what a gorgeous new face we're getting to see! This mural is wonderful! Thank you, Dad's Place, for providing the canvas and thank you to the artists who put so much work and talent into creating it.
And thank you, Birch, for the tip on this photo opp!!

Theme Day: Cobblestones
It's the first of the month and in the City Daily Photo community that means it's Theme Day! The theme selected for this month is "cobblestones."
Now, this one threw me for a bit of a loop. There are a few places where I could find cobblestones here in Scituate, but none of them really worked for me in terms of a unique photograph. And then it occurred to me - Egypt, with its rocky beach, would do nicely.
Welcome to April - enjoy - I'm off to celebrate my birthday. Now if only I could get my hands on a Sunday paper.... :) To see how other members of the City Daily Photo community interpreted this month's theme, click here!
